At Mama Flo, our mission is to find short and long term sustainable solutions to Period Poverty.

We never set out to start an NGO, Mama Flo just happened!

During the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic, we were asked if we would be able to assist in providing some sanitary pads to women in Site B Khayelitsha. As friends, we called on everyone we knew and thought we would collect a few pads and then go and drop them off.

The response we received from friends, family, and our network far surpassed anything we expected. We were swimming in pads! Not even sure how we would transport them all, we managed to fill our cars and head to Site B. There is no doubt that that day changed our lives forever.

We knew period poverty existed, we knew poverty existed but seeing how incredibly grateful so many people were, simply for a pack of pads… we were speechless. It was during this car ride home we all realised… this can’t be it, we need to go back. it was on this day on 16 June 2020 that Mama Flo was born.
